Who are we?

Westbury & District Choral Society (abbreviated to Westbury Choral) is a friendly, sociable choir that regularly rehearses a variety of works, both sacred and secular, in preparation for two main concerts per year, usually at Christmas and in the spring. A small group from the choir is also available to sing a local wedding services, Christmas or special events: contact us for details.  We rehearse on Wednesday evenings at Westbury Methodist Church, 7:30-9:30pm, between September and April.  New members are always welcome, no audition necessary.  Please browse our website for more details and forthcoming events.  If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact the conductor.

Our History & About Us

Westbury Choral is a Charity affiliated to Making Music.  It was formed around 1925 and whereas the emphasis has been on classical choral works, the Society has also provided the community with a varied programme encompassing different styles.  In addition to the two main concerts each year Westbury Choral has formed links with Matravers School, The Wiltshire Council Singers, Amesbury Town Band and Vallis Chamber Orchestra, as well as local professional soloists, and often performs as part of Westbury Music & Arts Festival.

The conductor is Luke Pickett.  Luke read Music at Cardiff and Bath Spa Universities.  He is now a freelance musician and teacher, and a senior GCSE and A Level examiner and team leader for Pearson Education, as well as a school governor.  He works extensively with Wiltshire Young Musicians, and acts as an advisor for Wiltshire’s Music Education Hub.  As a brass player Luke is in demand to play for and conduct local bands, and is also the Musical Director for Southwick Entertainers, a local amateur dramatics group.

Westbury Choral has a very talented and highly experience accompanist, Rob Danter.  Rob read Music and Education at Cambridge where his course included conducting and organ performance.  He has had a varied career, as a teacher, organist, accompanist, consort singer, music editor and composer.  His special interests include Early Music, a capella singing, historic Dutch and French organs, and fine music engraving.  Rob has been accompanist to several local choral societies, and is Music Director of Con Brio in Bradford-on-Avon. As well Rob's fine accompaniments, the Society has established a fund for use of instrumentalists where particular works require this.

A friendly welcome is offered to all new members.  All we ask in return is that regular commitment is given to rehearsals, with a little practise at home, in order to maintain the high standard the Society achieves.  We also run social events: past events have included coffee mornings, quiz evenings, old time music halls, members music evenings and BBQs.

Subscriptions are £90 per year, payable in full or in two instalments of £45 for the autumn term and £45 for the spring term.  Half price subscriptions are available for people in full-time education, or with children in full-time education.  Subscriptions cover the cost of the conductor, accompanist, hire of music, hire of the rehearsal venue, soloists, and publicity materials.

Friends of Westbury Choral can pay £20 per year to obtain discounted tickets and reserved seating at our Christmas and spring concerts, invitations to our social events, and their names printed in our programmes.  Contact us if you are interested in this.
